REMEMBERING TUSKEGEE AIRMAN LT. COL. GEORGE HARDY
George Edward Hardy was born on June 8, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the second of seven children in a family navigating segregation and limited prospects for African Americans in the early 20th century. Driven by curiosity and determination, he initially aspired to become an engineer. But when the United States began allowing Black Americans to train as military aviators, Hardy answered the call—joining the Army Air Corps and earning pilot wings through the Tuskegee training program.
During World War II, Lt. Hardy flew 21 combat missions escorting bombers over Europe in the famed P-51 Mustangs of the 332nd Fighter Group (Red Tails). In subsequent decades, he also served in the Korean War (45 missions in B-29s) and in Vietnam (70 missions in AC-119 gunships), tallying a distinguished multi-war record of service. Along the way he earned a B.S. in electrical engineering and an M.S. in systems engineering through the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology, and after retiring in 1971 with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he spent his post-service years telling the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, mentoring young people, and preserving this vital chapter in American history.
Lt. Col. George Hardy passed away on September 25, 2025, in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 100, closing a century of life spent in steadfast service and dedication. His life remains a testament to courage, perseverance in the face of discrimination, and the enduring power of example.
